Preston Ruggles: Vaseline Collector

January 3, 2010

I’ve been called the Ghenghis Khan of petroleum jelly acquisition. If you have it, vintage Vaseline in its original glass bottle, I will procure it. Why Vaseline in glass bottles? Why not the plastic tubs? If you have to ask those questions then you obviously don’t understand collecting. You don’t understand at all.

From an old pharmacy, I have a 1 lb. metal tin or can of Vaseline White Petroleum Jelly with the type of top that must be opened with a turn-key or some other opener. The label is entirely intact, but it is oily — evidently some of the contents seeped out or it was stored with other emollients. What can you tell me about this can of Vaseline?

I can’t speak for Preston, but who I CAN speak for is myself, and myself says you should count your fucking blessings, Linda, because you have the elusive one-pounder.

I’ve only ever heard of those. Never seen one.
